STORY
Inspired by the story “The Yellow Wallpaper”, this room is a physical manifestation of the character’s anxieties that she can never escape.
A PAIR OF EYES STARES BACK AT YOU.
This custom wallpaper was made by graphic artist Isabella Hilditch in Illustrator, and then I translated the design to a file for laser cutting at the Central LA Public Library. The Octavia Lab has a laser cutter which I used to cut multiple stencils out of pieces of basswood. The flats were sanded and papered using a combination of newsprint and temporary glue. The grey newsprint was painted with a base layer to color match the 12’ muslin wall, and then stenciled with the yellow spray paint. I combined a set of mirrored stencils to create a small rig to keep the patterned aligned when spraying. This process was repeated for a total of eight flats and two 12’ by 12’ peices of muslin. The 12’ x 12’ muslin was attached to the flats to create a false wall which was lit from behind, which illuminated the wallpaper design.
